An initiative of the Office for Public Engagement (OPE) and the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs, the Review Committee on Community-Engaged Scholarship offers guidance and voluntary feedback for participating community-engaged faculty during their promotion and tenure (P&T) process. The committee is primarily composed of University of Minnesota, Twin Cities tenured faculty members from diverse disciplines and professional fields. In addition, tenured faculty from Morris, Duluth, Rochester, and Crookston provide reviews for candidates on their campuses. All committee members are community-engaged scholars who have a distinguished record of scholarship produced through community-engaged research, teaching, and/or outreach.
Committee members review the dossier of participating scholar/candidates who conduct community-engaged work, then produce a letter offering an evaluation of the quality and impact of the candidate’s community-engaged scholarship. The letter is submitted to the scholar/candidate’s promotion and tenure (P&T) committee. Members also provide guidance and mentorship early career scholars interested in presenting his/her community-engaged scholarship within the promotion dossier.
The purpose of the review committee is threefold:
- To develop community-engaged scholars’ capacity to present engaged scholarship in promotion dossiers;
- To educate P&T committee members about standards for high quality community-engaged scholarship; and
- To provide internal reviews of the work of participating community-engaged scholars who are seeking promotion and/or tenure.
