A conversation series on the power of place-based community engagement.
The University of Minnesota has a long history of place-based community-engaged scholarship, an approach that aims to address social, economic, and environmental issues on the neighborhood level. Place-based engagement not only builds long-term partnerships, but can be a powerful way to address challenges with enduring results, while stimulating wider community engagement by faculty, staff, and students.
For nearly a decade, the University's Office for Public Engagement (OPE) has worked to foster and maintain reciprocal partnerships with local organizations and individuals that connect University staff, faculty, student and resources with community members based on mutual trust.
OPE has launched a webinar series titled Place Matters to showcase the University's many place-based projects and to give practitioners and participants of all levels the opportunity to share the challenges and considerations involved in place-based scholarship. All events are free and open to the public; registration is required.
April 30: Mapping Engagement
Noon - 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 30 via Zoom
Mapping Engagement will include an examination of some of the University's most creative and compelling place-based mapping projects. Presenters will include:
- Center for Urban and Regional Affairs Community GIS Program Coordinator Jeff Matson;
- College of Design Professor Tasoulla Hadjiyanni;
- College of Design Professor Tom Fisher;
- U-Spatial Director Len Kne; and
- University Libraries Mapping Prejudice Project Co-Director and Project Manager Ryan Mattke.
