2015-2016 Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows Program

Background and Purpose:

Community-engaged teaching and learning integrates community-based learning experiences with the academic curriculum to enhance student learning and address community issues.  This form of experiential learning emphasizes analysis and reflection, and allows students to meet their learning goals while engaged in work identified by community organizations in partnership with the course instructor. Community organizations include local, regional, national and globally-minded non-profits, governmental agencies, and other organizations that have an explicit mission to serve the public good.

For the coming year, the Center for Community-Engaged Learning (CCEL), in collaboration with the Office for Public Engagement, is once again offering a campus-wide curriculum development grant of $1,000 for faculty interested in further integrating community engagement into their course curricula.

The Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows Program aims to expand the number and quality of community-engaged learning courses on the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. Funded by the Office for Public Engagement, the program provides support to faculty to utilize community-engaged learning through the development of new courses or through revisions of existing courses. In light of the University's Twin Cities campus Strategic Plan, the program also offers opportunities for faculty to explore grand challenges in collaborations with community partners.

In addition to facilitating the development of community-engaged learning courses, the fellows will further institutionalize community-engaged learning by:

● Developing a plan for sharing their learning from this program with their department, division or unit;

● Exploring innovative community-engaged learning strategies that best meet the variety of learning needs of diverse students; and

● Contributing their course syllabus to CCEL’s syllabi collection to be available to other instructors.

Each grant recipient will be recognized as a Community-Engaged Teaching Learning Faculty Fellow. Fellows can anticipate receiving the award money during the semester the proposed course is taught. 


Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows Program grants are available for instructional staff members (tenured and tenure-track faculty, professional and administrative educational staff, and adjunct/lecturer instructors) who are involved in undergraduate, graduate and professional school teaching from any department on the Twin Cities campus. Applications may be submitted by individuals, teams of instructors, or departments on behalf of several instructors interested in team-teaching or interdisciplinary collaborations. Priority will be given to support new community-engaged learning courses, but revisions of existing courses to embed community engagement more fully into the curriculum will be considered. Priority is also given to the use of community engagement to enhance students’ capacity to meet one or more Grand Challenges.  To ensure institutional commitment to and lasting impact from the funded courses, applicants must provide a statement of endorsement from their department, school or college leader.

Selection Criteria:

Applications are reviewed by a panel of individuals with knowledge and experience in community-engaged learning, in consultation with CCEL staff. The selection criteria include the following:

 ● Inclusion of all the essential and desirable components of the University’s Curriculum-based, Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course Attribute;

● Well conceived and clearly defined rationale for including community-engaged learning in the course (centrality of community-engaged learning to course content, offering learning opportunities that could not take place within the classroom, etc.);

● Integration of community-engaged learning into statement of teaching philosophy;

●  Contribution of the course to expand community-engaged learning in the department: number of students participating, role of course in departmental major, planned frequency of course offerings;

●  Provisions for ensuring the course will be offered on a long-term basis (sustainability);

●  Commitment to participate in Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Fellows Workshops (see below); and

●  Focus on Grand Challenges, if appropriate.

NOTE:  This program does not support courses where the community-based learning element takes place with a for-profit business or in an international (non-U.S.) setting

Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows Workshops:

All fellows will participate in an interactive series of workshops during Spring semester 2016, facilitated by staff from the CCEL. Sessions will include workshops facilitated by faculty experienced in community-engaged teaching and learning pedagogy as well as by community partners with significant experience working with students from community-engaged learning courses. These sessions will focus on the principles and practice of community-engaged learning and provide substantial work time needed for faculty to design courses that integrate these principles. Fellows will have additional opportunities to visit relevant community organizations and meet with community partners as they develop their course syllabi.  They will also have opportunities to learn from and share their work with the other fellows participating in the program.

Requirements of Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows

(1) Fellows will participate in all scheduled Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows meetings during Spring semester 2016, including the following workshop sessions:

● A full-day session on Friday, January 8, 2016;

● A dinner meeting on Thursday March 10, 2016;

 ● A full-day session on Thursday, May 19, 2016; and

● A wrap-up session after fellows have taught their courses in Fall semester 2016 (date to be determined).

(2) Additionally, fellows will have at least one individual consultation with CCEL to discuss their class;

(3)  Design a new course or modify an existing course with a community-engaged component;

(4) Teach the course during Fall semester 2016 or Spring semester 2017 and have the course become a part of the regular rotation of course offerings;

(5) Participate in the evaluation and assessment of the course;

(6) Be engaged in building relationships with the community organization(s) including meeting with community partners as part of preparation, implementation and evaluation of the course;

(7) Present their experience as an instructor of a community-engaged learning course to their respective department/school and other faculty colleagues in at least one public setting of their choice; and

(8) Maintain good communication with CCEL staff throughout participation in the fellows program and beyond as the course is implemented.

CCEL will assist Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows via:

 ● Identifying readings and resources about the development of community-engaged learning courses.

 ● Providing curricula consultation related to community-engaged learning course development.

 ● Planning and facilitating the fellows workshops.

 ● Assisting with forging connections with community groups, training sessions to prepare students for community work, monitoring students in community agencies, structuring reflection experiences as part of the class, and assessing and evaluating community-engaged learning.

2)   Send your most recent syllabus of the course you plan to revise by participating in this program (if applicable); and
