Join the Campus Community Coordinators Alliance for their first meeting of 2013
The Campus Community Coordinators Alliance was formed over 10 years ago with the goal of bringing together people at the U of M who see their work as engaging the University community with the broader community. The purpose of this meeting is to gather input through a facilitated conversation about the goals and vision for the group. Whether you have attended every past CCCA meeting or this will be your first one, we invite all to come and contribute to the shaping of our alliance. Two areas of conversation that are already in process that we hope to integrate into the discussion are how CCCA might better align with the Office of Public Engagement and implementation of the community project online tracker tool to better serve community requests for partnership. College of Pharmacy Receives Lawrence C. Weaver Transformative Community Service Award
Congratulations to the College of Pharmacy on being selected to receive the Lawrence C. Weaver Transformative Community Service Award, which recognizes a school of pharmacy demonstrating a major institutional commitment to addressing unmet community needs through education, practice and research. The college was recognized for bringing direct care to underserved communities locally and nationally; developing new practices in underserved rural, urban, and Native American communities; and advocating for the ability of pharmacists to serve the public.
Restorative Justice Community Action (RJCA) Seeks Community Members
RJCA is the nonprofit organization who partners with Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota, the courts, and the police to manage a restorative justice option for offenders who commit specific misdemeanors. The University also has a contract with RJCA which helps support services in the campus area. RJCA is always looking for community members (if you live, work, study, or do business here, you qualify) to participate on the panels who meet with offenders to represent the community interest in developing their plans for restorative action. Panels are held on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings, and you can opt to attend as many as you’d like. RJCA is also looking for service projects to offer to referred participants. MaGrath Community Engagement Award Nominations Due March 15 to OPE
The Office for Public Engagement seeks applications for the C. Peter MaGrath Community Engagement Award and the Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award. Sponsored by the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU), these are regional and national awards that recognize public colleges and universities for their engaged learning and discovery. The APLU accepts one application from each institution. A University-wide awards committee will review applications to determine which should represent the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. We invite University units and their community partners to submit applications by March 15, 2013. Download application guidelines from the APLU website. President’s Community-Engaged Scholar Award Nominations Due March 25 to OPE
This newly established systemwide award recognizes one faculty or P&A individual annually for exemplary community-engaged scholarship in his/her field of inquiry. The faculty or P&A recipient will have demonstrated a longstanding academic career that embodies the University of Minnesota’s definition of public engagement. Each college on the Twin Cities campus and the campuses of Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Rochester may select one individual to serve as a finalist for award. All finalists become eligible for the University-wide award. Detailed instructions regarding the nomination process for the President’s Community-Engaged Scholar Award can be found on the Office for Public Engagement website.
All nominations must go through the designated “college contact” listed on the President’s Community-Engaged Scholar Award website. Nominations materials are due Monday, March 25.
Outstanding Community Service Awards Due April 5 to OPE
The Outstanding Community Service Awards recognize faculty, staff, students, and University-affiliated community members who, by devoting their time, talents, and expertise to serve the public good through research, teaching, and/or public service have made significant, demonstrable contributions to society's well-being. Four awards will be made: (1) Outstanding Faculty Member Community Service Award; (2) Outstanding Student Community Service Award; (3) Outstanding Staff Community Service Award; and (4) Outstanding Community Partner Service Award. Nominations for awards are due by 5 p.m. April 5. Full nomination guidelines can be found on the award's web page.
On Purdue’s ePubs are two new Service-Learning reflection journals available to download for free. These academic tools were created to help students with Service-Learning and Academic Community Engagement assignments and projects. The journal has reflection assignments to help prepare for a Service-Learning project, as well as the conclusion of the project. Reflection in the classroom is an important teaching tool for critical thinking. Students have the opportunity to enhance their learning experience by answering prompted questions that stimulate thoughts and ideas. For more information and to download these journals, go to

Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award (Deadline: March 29, 2013)
Applicants must be affiliated with a Campus Compact member institution. They must also be a senior faculty member (post-tenure or middle-to-late career at institutions without tenure) appointment. Evidence of deeply engaged, high-quality academic work: demonstrated integration of civic and community engagement in one’s teaching, research, and/or service.
2013 Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty (Deadline: April 26, 2013 at 5 pm)
This annual award recognizes a faculty member who connects his or her teaching, research, and service to community engagement. The Lynton Award is designated as an award for early career faculty. The award will be presented at the 19th Annual Conference of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.
Call for Proposals: 14th Annual Conference of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium (Deadline: March 15, 2013)
Proposals are being sought for presentations and posters that will inform or advance the research and practice of Engaged Scholarship and University-Community Partnerships through means of research findings, innovate program design and partnership models, proven community-institutional impacts, effective curriculum or service-learning models, collaborative policy development and integration, or successful civic engagement practices.

Neighborhood Liaison Program Job Posting
The Office for Student and Community Relations is launching a Neighborhood Liaison program that will identify identify property owners and students renting in the neighborhoods around the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus and plug them into an information network to help student renters meet their neighbors, share strategies for working with landlords, neighbors, or roommates, share resource information, promote volunteering, and plan social and community events. The Office for Student and Community Relations is seeking to hire four students (stipend provided) for the coming academic years. This program explores that era’s struggles as well as current movements for equality, and dares to ask questions about racial justice in America today. During the three-week program, students meet with civil rights activists who were active in the 1960s and those who are active now, and with lawyers, politicians, educators, and youth to learn about how America’s present is inextricably linked to its past.

This program looks at the economy, housing systems, education, welfare, government policies, urban sprawl, regional race and class segregation, and institutional discrimination. This program is based off-campus in the Twin Cities community and includes a 20-hour per week internship placement.
