Awarding Engaged Scholarship: School of Public Health Professor Kathleen Call

Kathleen Call

School of Public Health Professor Kathleen Call has received the University of Minnesota President's Community-Engaged Faculty Scholar Award for exemplary engaged scholarship conducted in partnership with the community to create new knowledge that addresses important and significant societal issues.

Awarded through the Office for Public Engagement and the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs, the award recognizes one faculty or P&A individual annually for outstanding engaged scholarship in his/her field of inquiry.

Professor Call’s research falls into two main areas: the measurement of health insurance coverage, and the extent to which health insurance coverage translates into access to health care services among culturally diverse, immigrant, young, and low-income populations. In 2002, Call was introduced to community-based participatory research (CBPR) when she was invited to join the evaluation team for the Minnesota Department of Health’s Eliminating Health Disparities Initiative.

Call serves as co-director of the Community Engagement Core for the Center for Health Equity, co-director of the School of Public Health’s Health Disparities Working Group, and the Faculty Liaison for the Population and Community Engagement Core of the University’s Clinical Translational Science Institute.
