Engagement Spotlight

Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies

The Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies (CRES) at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) provides technical assistance and research to entrepreneurs and small business owners in northwest Minnesota. Projects are typically undertaken as class assignments under the guidance of UMC faculty.  


Current projects
CRES students are currently working on projects that include a financial projection for a start-up business, a brochure for a resort, and a market analysis for a golf course.
Recently completed projects include a marketing plan, a social media marketing plan, and branding guidelines for three different organizations.  CRES also hosts an Entrepreneur Speaker Series featuring such experts as Chuck Runyon, CEO and co-founder of Anytime Fitness; Dave Anderson, founder of Famous Dave's Restaurants; and Jill Blashack Strahan, CEO and founder of Tastefully Simple.  CRES' community partners include Northwest Minnesota Small Business Development Center, Northwest Minnesota Foundation, local chambers of commerce, and regional economic development agencies.  

 

Impact

Currently CRES is engaging approximately 50 students in class projects, has two student interns, and is working with four UMC faculty. Since its inception in 2010, CRES has completed more than 50 projects for regional entrepreneurs and businesses, employed 17 student interns, engaged more than 100 students in course-embedded projects, and involved eight faculty members in CRES projects.  Learn more

This annual, systemwide award recognizes one faculty member or one academic professional and administrative employee for exemplary community-engaged scholarship in his or her field of inquiry.

U of M Office for Public Engagement Seeks Applicants for the MacJannet Prize

The University's Office for Public Engagement (OPE) is seeking applicants for the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship, an international award recognizing exceptional student community engagement and community service. OPE oversees a committee to review University applications. The deadline for applications to OPE is 4 p.m., Jan. 8.  Learn more.
 

U of M Postsecondary Teaching and Learning Offering Engaging Pedagogies Series
The University's College of Education and Human Development's Department of Post Secondary Teaching and Learning is hosting a monthly colloquium entitled Engaging Pedagogies designed to address the strategies and challenges of community-engaged teaching and scholarship.
 
U of M CHANCE partnering with University Libraries to Promote Muslim Journeys Bookshelf
This fall, the University's Cedar-Humphrey Action for Neighborhood Collaborative Engagement (CHANCE) is partnering with the University Libraries to promote the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf. The National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association awarded the project to 843 libraries and state humanities councils across the country. Learn more.

Holland Collection of Service Learning and Community Engagement at the University of Nebraska Omaha's Criss Library is the new home for the National Service-Learning Clearing House library collection.  The content will be accessible through the library's online catalog and available for interlibrary loans.

National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Grants (Deadline: Jan. 13, 2014)
Through Our Town, the National Endowment for the Arts provides a limited number of grants, ranging from $25,000 to $200,000, for creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful and sustainable places with the arts at their core.

Independent Sector's John W. Gardner Leadership Award recognizes visionaries working in or with the nonprofit community whose leadership has been transformative and who have empowered constituencies, strengthened participation, and inspired movements.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Dissertation Fellowship Award (Deadline: Feb. 4, 2014)
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation fellowship supports advanced doctoral students completing dissertations that further the understanding of the educational pathways and experiences of high-achieving, low-income students. 

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Cultural Exchange Fund (Deadline: Feb. 13, 2014)
Supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this fund assists U.S.-based presenting professionals and their organizations and companies in building partnerships and collaborations with international touring artists, companies and their collaborators and to experience the work of artists from around the world in its cultural context.

The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning is a peer-reviewed journal that covers research, theory, pedagogy, and other issues related to curriculum-based service-learning, campus-community partnerships,  scholarship of engagement, and scholarship on engagement.

The Journal of Community Psychology is seeking papers focused on organization theory in community psychology.  This special issue aims to advance the literature on organization theory through a focus on community contexts.

Call for Proposals: 2014 Upper Midwest Civic Engagement Summit (Deadline: Feb. 10, 2014)
Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin Campus Compact invite proposals for 60-minute skill-building or issue-focused sessions, 15-minute innovation mini-sessions, and posters for the Upper Midwest Civic Engagement Summit. The Summit will provide opportunities for faculty, professional staff, student and community leaders interested in civic engagement activities to network and learn from one another.   The conference will be held June 12-13, 2014 in Menomonie, Wisconsin at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Editors of the Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement are publishing a Special Issue in 2015 with guest editors Brandon Kliewer at Florida Gulf Coast University and Judith Ramaley, President Emerita, Portland State University and Winona State University.

This journal is focused on scholarship related to engagement in the public arena and, in particular, on considerations of citizenship, scholarship of teaching and learning, assessment of civic-engagement projects, and relationship between engagement and social media.  

Call for Papers:  The Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement (Deadline: Ongoing)
This journal highlights innovative endeavors, critically examines emerging issues, trends, challenges and opportunities, and reports on the studies of impact in the areas of public service, outreach, engaged research, community-based participatory research, action research, public scholarship, service-learning, and community-service.

U of M 2014 Summer Advanced Research Program (ARP)
ARP provides research training through a structured core curriculum, mentored research projects, weekly research seminars, and a final presentation of research at the annual CTSI Poster Session with all CTSI-Ed scholars. With input and oversight by the faculty mentor, the scholars will design a mutually acceptable research-training plan according to his or her career interests and the ongoing research programs of the faculty mentor. Applications are due Feb. 3, 2014.

U of M Institute on the Enviroment Acara Challenge: Social Venture Plan Competition
The University's Institute on the Environment's annual Acara Challenge recognizes and rewards students developing solutions to the world’s most pressing social and environmental problems.  

Critical Participatory Action Research Summer Institute 2014
Hosted and organized by The Public Science Project, the Critical Participatory Action Research Summer Institute is designed to bring together participants from universities and community-based organizations around the country to introduce the theory, methods, and ethics of critical participatory action research to graduate students, faculty, and members of community-based organizations. 


U of M Institute on the Environment Resident Fellows Competition
The Institute on the Environment is recruiting a new cohort of resident fellows from across the University. The program supports creative faculty members from a range of backgrounds.  Support includes $10,000 in flexible funding and ongoing support for collaborative research projects and international travel grants. Proposals due Dec. 15, 2013. 

U of M Community-Based Participatory Research Course
This introductory course is intended for graduate students and community practitioners interested in adding community-based participatory research to their repertoire of effective approaches to understanding and addressing social and health disparities.
