Professional development opportunities for the University's community-engaged faculty, staff, and students.

The University of Minnesota’s Office for Public Engagement (OPE) Engaged Scholar programming offers a variety of professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students interested in community-engaged research and teaching. From online training modules to two-day retreats, customized workshops to individualized dossier review services, OPE supports University researchers, instructors, and students in their understanding and practice of authentic and effective University-community engagement. 2024 offerings include: 
 
Decolonization Roundtables 

Challenging discussion, peer support, and a safe place to test new ideas on the topic of decolonization and its impacts. Hosted by the OPE, the program is co-sponsored by the University's Department of American Indian Studies and Institute for Advanced Study. Engaged Scholar Promotion and Tenure Workshops

This annual three-part workshop identifies challenges that community-engaged scholars face in the promotion and tenure process and presents several strategic and practical approaches to addressing these challenges. All sessions  take place via Zoom.

Engaged Scholar Summer Institute 

A supportive, professional network in which early and mid-career scholars from throughout the University's five-campus system can explore and develop core skills needed for authentic and effective community-engaged scholarship. Offered annually, participants can expect feature presentations, panel discussions, practice sessions, and interactive exercises focused on the basics of building partnerships, making sense of diverse systems of knowledge and experience, and exploring how these knowledge systems are put into practice.

Engaged Scholar Workshops 

Customized sessions designed to help University of Minnesota faculty take advantage of the benefits of publicly-engaged scholarship within their disciplines. Workshops combine discussions with presentations and hands on exercises to explore ideas and best practices specific to community-engaged research and teaching.  

Engagement Academy for University Leaders 

An award-winning, international professional development program designed for higher education leaders committed to enhancing the value and performance of their institutions by deepening collaborative relationships with their communities. Programs focus on how leaders build engaged institutions through the complex process of organizational change.

Ethics and the Engaged Scholar: A Research Ethics Week discussion

An annual event presented as a part of the University's Research Ethics Week that's designed to promote, maintain, and model high standards of ethics and integrity in community-engaged research.

From Transaction to Transformation learning module 

A professional development learning journey for community-engaged leaders and learners. The ten-minute module offers a captivating, interactive roadmap for conducting public engagement and features the wisdom and talents of some of the University's most successful engagement scholars and practitioners. You learn by making scenario-based decisions along the way. 

Review Committee on Community-Engaged Scholarship

An initiative of OPE and the University's Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs, the Review Committee on Community-Engaged Scholarship offers guidance and voluntary feedback for participating community-engaged faculty during their promotion and tenure (P&T) process. 

2025 University of Minnesota Public Engagement Conference

The University of Minnesota Office for Public Engagement hosts a systemwide public engagement conference showcasing the variety of ways that the University is partnering with communities, governments, non-profit organizations, and business and industry. Registration information coming soon.
